Ken Sachar was born in Cape Town, South Africa, where he studied psychology at the University of Cape Town. In 1978 he moved to London and continued his studies before starting a career in business. With a keen interest in art history and living amongst his creative wife and daughters, Ken began studying art at The Institute HGS. This was the start of his dedicated fine art studies, attending Hampstead School of Art, Heatherly School of Fine Art and the Prince’s Royal Drawing School. He was awarded the student prize for Figurative Art at the HSOA in 2003 and since then has been experimenting with different media to explore his place in the world and reflect upon the changing times.
The figure is consistent within Ken’s work, regularly drawing and painting from life, his love for the human form drives his practice. Though proficient in several disciplines, over time his favourite medium has become stone.
“I love working with stone, the hammer on the chisel making the shape as the stone resists and then gives way as the form emerges and is refined”.
Having spent time in South Africa’s spectacular national parks and nature reserves, Ken takes great inspiration from African wildlife and has produced a series of animal sculptures in clay and soapstone. While he often works from observation or photography, Ken also enjoys using raw materials to ignite his imagination. This has led him to produce new expressive abstract work, guided by the natural lines and forms within stone. Similarly his paintings have also changed direction, experimenting with texture to create works inspired by his dreams.
Ken Sachar currently works and lives in London, his work is held in private collections in the U.K. and internationally.
